INTRODUCTION GIANT FOXTAIL
Giant Foxtail (Setaria faberi) is a monocot weed in the Poaceae family.  In Iowa this weed first evolved resistance to Group 1 (Legacy A) herbicides in 1994 and infests Soybean.   Group 1 (Legacy A) herbicides are known as Inhibition of Acetyl CoA Carboxylase (Inhibition of Acetyl CoA Carboxylase ).  Research has shown that these particular biotypes are resistant to clethodim, fenoxaprop-ethyl, fluazifop-butyl, quizalofop-ethyl, and sethoxydim and they may be cross-resistant to other Group 1 (Legacy A) herbicides.

GENERAL

The grower has not noticed it in any other fields but the grower has changed his herbicide rotations and no longer uses sethoxydim. Originally this grower used sethoxydim from 1986 until 1994 and then applied sethoxydim 3 times in 1994, and after poor control he applied clethodim which gave reasonable control. 1995 - BASF did some field work. Kevin Adam began work in 1996 on a masters thesis. Applied up to 16 x in field, did get some suppression but not complete control. Sethoxydim, quizalofop, fluazifop+fenoxaprop were not effective but clethodim was. Nicosulfuron is effective. The grower has stopped using sethoxydim, he uses metolachlor in soybean (follows up patches with clethodim) and metolachlor and nicosulfuron in corn. In a no till system. In 1996 he used Roundup ready technology and again in 1998. Sethoxydim GR50 there was a 48 fold increase, quizalofop 22.5 fold, fluazifop + fenoxaprop 6.5 fold, clethodim 2.1 fold, nicosulfuron 0.5.

Confirmation Tests

Greenhouse trials comparing a known susceptible Giant Foxtail biotype with this Giant Foxtail biotype have been used to confirm resistance. For further information on the tests conducted please contact the local weed scientists that provided this information.
 
Genetics

Genetic studies on HRAC Group 1 resistant Giant Foxtail have not been reported to the site.  There may be a note below or an article discussing the genetics of this biotype in the Fact Sheets and Other Literature
